The Maloik (Malocchio) or the "Evil Eye"

While not Italian in origin, many Italians believe in il malocchio (often pronounced "maloik.") Part superstition, part tradition, it is the belief in the evil eye, placed on someone when someone else is jealous or envious of the other's good luck. The malocchio then manifests itself in some sort of misfortune onto the cursed person, usually some physical ailment.

It can also be done involuntarily, like when you see a beautiful baby and you compliment the parent. That could be construed as envy and the parent must then say something like "God bless her" right after it to ward off a possible malocchio, many believing that even though the compliment may have sounded sincere, its real motive was envy. That's why my cousin made me put a red ribbon over the threshold of my new home and told me to throw salt out of all the doors- to protect us from envious people. The person who gives the evil eye is not necessarily evil, but does indeed harbour jealousy.

One can also ward it off by wearing a horn (cornuto) around the neck
or making a gesture with your hand (mano cornuta-which you may know from heavy metal concerts). It is said that Italian men wear the cornuto to protect their genitalia from the malocchio, as the curse is said to harm sperm.

I can't say that I believe or disbelieve the malocchio and I only have one indirect experience with it...

When my mom was in her twenties, she got a great job with the government. Soon after, she began getting terrible headaches that aspirin would not relieve. She suffered with them intermittently for a few weeks when it dawned on my litte Sigi grandmother what the problem was.

"Someone gave you the maloik. (malocchio).""You're crazy. Who would do that?" my mom responded, not telling her she was crazy for believing in "stregheria" or Italian witchcraft, but, rather, for thinking someone would put the curse on her. (The irony that my grandmother was a devout Catholic whose church forbids belief in witchcraft is not lost on me.)
"Who knows? You have that nice job now- someone is jealous and put it on you."
"Nobody is jealous of me."
"I want you to go see the strega down the street."
The local strega, or Italian witch, was known to be capable of removing the horrible malocchio that afflicted unassuming Italians in the South Philadelphia neighborhood where they lived.
"I'm not going to the strega. Forget about it. The headaches will go away."
My grandmother never mentioned the malocchio again to my mother.

About a week after the strega conversation, my mom could not find her watch when she was getting ready for work. She asked my grandmother if she had seen it but she had not. My mom, a very organized and detail-oriented individual (you say anal, I say detail-oriented) who never misplaces anything, was disturbed by the missing watch. She looked everywhere for it and finally resigned herself to the fact that it must have slipped off to or from work. The stress only contributed to her constant headaches. (Knowing my mom like I do, I don't for a minute believe that she accepted that her watch was gone, and she probably continued to search for it for at least 24 hours more.)

A few days later my mom woke up and found her watch on her bureau. She put it on and asked my grandmother how it got there. My grandmother told her she didn't know. When she got home from work she grilled my grandmother about the watch.

"Are you sure you didn't borrow it and not put it back?"
"Bah, why do I need a watch? I don't go anywhere!"
"Did Daddy find it and put it in my room?"
"I don't think so. So... how are your headaches?"
"Funny, I didn't get one today."

My sigi grandmother smiled but did not say anything.
"Why are you smiling?"
"I took your watch to the strega since you wouldn't go yourself. She took off the malocchio."
"Mom!"
she yelled
"It worked, didn't it?" My mom didn't know what to say to that. It was more troubling to her that someone had put the malocchio on her then the fact that there was a Sicilian witch living on their street who claimed to be able to both curse and remove curses.

How did the strega allegedly remove the malocchio. Probably by inserting the tip of a needle into the eye of another needle while saying: “Occhi e contro e perticelli agli occhi, crepa la invida e schiattono gli occhi." That means “Eyes against eyes and the holes of the eyes, envy cracks and eyes burst.” She then dropped the needles on top of three drops of olive oil in water and sprinkled three pinches of salt into the water. The strega would then jab scissors into the water through the oil three times and cut the air above the bowl three times and POOF! The spell was FINITO!

...or the aspirin finally kicked in.

I to know about the Malocchio and lived in fear of it. I am highly educated but I do believe this does happen.

Entertaining post, even if it was about the Malocchio. My mom mentions this every so often. I have an Italian horn, but I didn't even realize it was associated with the Maloochio. I just wear it because I like it.

I have a question for anyone out there. I just learned how to remove the malocchio with the water and oil and the needles. Can I remove the malocchio for someone now, or does someone special need to do it.?

I don't have a definitive answer but when my nonna was alive, she used to say that a strega had to remove the curse.

I used to wear the mano cornuta to ward off the malocchio back when they were in style (80's!)

Sorry I don't know more.

I don't think you need a Strega. My aunts not a strega - also lives in S.Philly - and she has taken the maloik off for me too. And never wants me to thanks her she'll say "Yea it was on you. No zi zi you don't thank me" All I know is it works.

I have seen both my mother and grandmother perform this many times and it has ALWAYS worked. Both are Italian but I don't think they are witches. Just true believers. My mother has lifted the curse from me over the phone. It really is amazing!

I remember my (first generation) mother telling me about my grandmother once in awhile giving her a bobby pin to take "to the lady up the street" when they lived in Jersey City (this would be in the '40s/'50s) when she would get a bad bout of headaches. Now that both my mother & grandmother are gone, I never knew the spelling of "molyook" (as I remembered it from my childhood!) & here it is. Thanks so much - I have to remember the removal ritual!

I enjoyed reading your post about the Malocchio. I cannot say I liked it because that can be taken as envy and I WON'T go there! However you need to mention to those that do not know or for those that care to wear the Horn, the Italian Horn must be given to you for it to have any power to protect you from Malocchio. It needs to be a gift not bought by you, but given to you. The original ones in Italy are made of Coral, I personaly like the ones made of Bone or Gold.

My Grandmother would tell us in Italian the words to use to get rid of the evil eye. According to her it could only be told to someone on Christmas Eve at midnight. Anyone ever hear of that?

Some definately has put the Maloochio on me! I have had nothing but bad luck for months now and wear an 'evil eye' bracelet every day. It doesn't work. The headaches are relentless and I just had a car accident. Can you take the Maloik off yourself. I'll do the oil and needles - I'm deperate. My aunt who used to do this for me is in a Nursing Home now and isn't aware of things ... HELP!

I wear an 'evil eye' bracelet every day but doesn't seem to be working .. HELP

The Malocchi was passed to me on Christmas eve more than 30 years ago. I never knew I was a strega!
I know I can give it, to people who have hurt me or my family, but the circumstances must make me really angry.
I can remove it too, but I have found, people come to you only when they are in trouble, some people do not have the malocchi- just life problems.
The tendancy to think that people are cursing you can become an obsession!
Since you are not paid, this practice can be a burden and i do not tell people about it.
If I think you have a problem, I will pray for you and have done "malocchi" removal on my own.
My advice is: Stay away from negative people and people who complement you too much. I have tried to avoid jealousy, but no matter how much or how little I have had, people are jealous. Pray for your enemies.
It all comes down to POSITIVE thinking. Prayer is positive thoughts! Pray for those you know and love. Do not thing negativly about others. Negative thoughts hurt!

motorbaby said...

Oheleneo, so true about staying positive and keeping away from toxic people. I have just started to rid my life of bad energy and I feel better already. Envy and jealously are bad traits in people and better to stay away from people like that. Keep positive and good aura will stay around you. Be thankful for what you have and don't want what others have. This will keep you happy.

I grew up seeing my Italian father take away the malocchio from friends and family. I could remember the people sitting with my mother in the living room while my father went to another room with a cookie/cracker, said prayers over it and came back into the room giving the cookie/cracker to the person to eat. People swore whatever prayers he said worked. He did this into his 80s until he died.

For years I asked my grandmother to pass down to me the olive oil and water "spell" for checking to see if a person has the malocchio, and how to fix it. Apparently, she was the strega! I think she didn't like being called the witch, and didn't want me to be called it either. Now she is old and not lucid, and I felt the tradition, quaint as it may be, was lost. Thank for your post. I enjoyed it! - 1/4 Abruzzesa, 1/4 Siciliana...with a maiden name of Calabria... :)

Hi Claudia,

Unfortunately my family has a very bad maloik. My mother and I have been trying to find solutions to end this horrible thing. It would mean the world to my family and I if you could possibly share the Strega's name or any other information to help. My family is also from Philly but I fret that I am commenting on this post too late considering you are no longer active? Please please please get back to me as soon as possible. Maybe an exchange of emails would be better? This is pretty much an emergency considering most of my family is deceased possibly from this maloik. Please take the time to contact me.

-Thank you

Claudia-

Is there any way you could contact me about the Malocchio and your family's local strega? My Italian grandmother, now deceased, thought she had the evil eye placed on her and she went to a witch doctor in Philadelphia (my grandparents hometown) and it was confirmed. Since then her eldest son was murdered for working with the black market in Vietnam, and all of her other sons (2 others)) have died painfully of cancer. My grandmother died of a stroke that killed her slowly and painfully. And her husband, my grandfather, died of a broken heart and colon cancer. There is no one left to carry on the Donatoni name, my mother is the only one left. And my mother and I think that that was my grandmother's curse. My mother is the only one left and I have been nothing but a burden to my family. From an early age; asthma, bloody noses out of no where; and now an abundance of painful kidney stones that no doctor, from Georgetown to John's Hopkins can figure out what is wrong with me. I cannot hold a job and can therefore not live on my own. Something has go to give.

If my family was cursed due to my grandmother, I don't see why it was not lifted at the time of her oil and water ceremony. I'd like to go and meet someone who could possibly lift this off of myself or my family. Headaches are a regular occurrence and my nose bleeds come out of no where to this day (I'm 27). If you do not feel comfortable sharing local information, I understand but if you could point me in the right direction, or to outside sources, I would be greatly appreciative. Family means the world to me and my Italian heritage is greatly important as well since my brother and I are the last two who can carry on any resemblance of our heritage...even with the last name Miller :) I wear my grandmother's coral Italian horn necklace, but nothing helps.

I would appreciate any help or advice you could give.

Best,
Sarah

When my husband was 13 years old, he and his friends went into the local pizza restaurant. They were young and cocky and as they passed a woman referred to as the local witch, "La Strega" my husband made fun of her. She called him over and cursed him. She told him from then on he would be sick all of his life and he was.
He suffered here on earth. I wish someone could have removed this curse since I do believe. as the locals in this West Philadelphia Italian neighborhood referred to as "little Italy", that this woman was a very powerful witch.
My husband didn't tell me about this incident until later in our lives but I was a believer instantly.
My mother in law used to do the oil and water along with an article that belonged to the person she was helping. I asked her to teach me and she said it had to be on Christmas Eve. I never did learn to do this and I don't think her son ever told her about "La Strega".

Yes! My grandma told me the same thing! I never learned it before she passed.

I have been DESPERATELY seeking a Strega for almost a year now. For more than 2 years I have been victim to the malocchio.

I believe. Seeing is believing. My Aunt was the one I was a witness to helping others. She helped me, too. Like most others as her, she is dead.

I am at the lowest point in my life; healthwise, financially... a week doesn't go by where I get smacked in the face by the curse. I was very well of; making good money, big house, 7 cars. Now no job. 59 year old engineers cannot compete with college graduates. Lost my business, too. I have no car. House is in foreclosure. The list is long, but so is this message. I'll stop now. I live in NJ. I can travel. Does anyone know where I can find help?

The church is not the answer. I need a Strega. Mille grazie.

Unknown said...

Help. I need help. 2 years of the malocchio have destroyed my life. Can't find a Strega in NJ or NY. I believe. Seeing is believing. My aunt could remove the overlooks. I witnessed. She is dead. Most of them are. No one left in Jersey City. Please tell if you know where I can find. Every time I think I hit rock bottom the ground beneath me opens up and I start falling again. If I was not serious I wouldn't use my real name. For those who don't believe, do you think Moses parted the Red Sea? If so, how can the malocchio be considered a superstition? Which is more far-fetched? Help.

Unknown said...

Hello Sarah. Any luck? If so please share. I'm at the end of my rope. The curse has been following me for 2 years. I cannot find a Strega to remove. Yes, curses can be real and difficult sometimes to detect since they manifest out through our own personality/ego causing us to act in unbecoming ways, be self-destructive, self-sabotaging, make poor decisions, experience lack and poor health which lead us to a string of failed relationships and jobs.i use to act this because a curse was placed on my and a friend of mine at the office introduced me to a spell caster who helped me with the removal of the curse and i was totally free. The email to contact again is lordazeez1990@hotmail.com

Is my post available or is it gone again. I can't type this again. Blah! I have much to share and would greatly appreciate sigi me or Sarah Miller contacting me. So much illness tragedy in my family. Someone's got the maloik on my family I feel back to when my grandma came from Italy to the USA. My grandfather suffered my grandma died out of the blue the day she was coming home from a short hospital
Stay My mom contracted a flesh eating bacteria on a cruise was in the hospital over five months she fought and fought every battle until 2008. One surgery after another organ failure diabetic seizures heart attack (sure more than one they just didn't know). I can go on and on about my poor mother. God has his angel home. My dad recently had two strokes my son has been home for two years with reconstructive surgeries oh lord how the list goes on and on. Yet my moms sisters side has normal incidents. I always felt we got pushed aside and because we have a loving family people can be jealous very jealous. It doesn't have to be over money or a big house or a expensive car. Some people harbor so much hatred and anger and I truly feel they project that negativity on a person or persons. Every time my husband and I move one step towards a better future for our family we are literally dragged or tugged back five steps. Always always always. Even my grandma my mom and dad. Please help. I doubt there's a Strega in my area. Can you perform the curse removal yourself if you are taught correctly or someone else must? If you can then can you help others in need of evil eye lifted? Someone else must purchase the horns for you to wear to ward off any ill will or remove it? You can't buy it yourself??? Much admiration and gratefulness sending your way. Anxiously awaiting replies. My email is valentinokh@msn.com or sweetiekavh@msn.com. Thank you a million times

Its sll true. My mother 84 years old dies the prayer in Italian.

Unknown said...

I'm italian and i know alot about the malocchio m'y grandmother tould me mostly everything.
She was born in calabria were malocchio is popular for calabrese ( people Who live in that place)
The prayers are passed down the 24 December at midnight.
Unfortunately my grandmother( nonna) died before I could be whit her the 24 December but she knew that I know the prayers.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
- for those who grew up seeing someone doing the malocchio only talk about it whit your family cause if other people know the prayers you use for the ritual ( salt oil and prayers Malocchio) they could use them against you and your family. Like we say in Italian AQUA IN BOCA ! ;)

- If Nobody showed you how to remove the evil eye at midnight on December 24 th you can't remove the evil eye.

-If you know the prayers and everything about malocchio you can help your family and friends by preying for them.

- my Grandmother told me once:<< sei piccola>>( your little) what she meant is I'm not ready when you are ready you are gonna feel it in your heart.

- if you want to you could talk to some members in your family or friends example : my grandma as a friend and to sisters that know how to remove the evil eye and I talk to them a lot.

I received a molocchio recently against me from a strega from Italy herself. She is jealous of my husband as hers is dead. She played up to be one of my dearest friends.
While her feelings are obvious to me she is in denial. She believes she is angry with me because of my actions not her own - yet she has been trying to get my husband and I to separate and spending time alone with him. She has lied to our friends about me. I love her so much it is sad to see this in her. She is a dichotomy, really a split person. My blood is gypsy and my skills are pretty strong without any candles or alters...but I know one God and he knows me...that's all I need.

God as my witness I send all of her energy back to her no more no less. I reject her hatred. There is no person no force greater than God and his love. I pray she sees and knows the evil that grows and dwells within her so she may stop it.

Amen

( the last time my friends and I said such a prayer together the man who vexed me so was stricken with a night terror seeing the pain he caused me and awoke as he was thrown against a wall by unknown and unseen forces.....do not live in fear of your enemies...go with God instead he already knows the way )

Claudia, thanks for sharing this awesome explanation of the "maloik". My ex-husband's, mom & grandmother lived with us for years. Both of these were two of the greatest women I, ever knew. At age 99 I, remember people"sneaking" over to visit great grandma. Funny now I, think back all those times the dishpan of water, bottle of olive oil etc...I, didn't realize how much people respected her ability to break the curse. I'm not Italian, but I, am superstitious as my Irish mom was especially where salt is concerned. My son gave me a evil look the other day. I, then tried explaining the maloik ,& it's roots in his Italian side of the family. Your blog will definitely help. He will be 21 in June I,think a gold horn would be a great gift. Thanks for taking me back to my late mother-in-law (Angela T.)& great grandma(Mary Pastore).

My grandmother was no stress but she was always the one to remove the maloik. I used to watch her when she did it...no needles but yes to the oil and water. She'd say a prayer over the water and make the sign of the cross then drop a droplet of oil into the water. If it spread than you had a malika and the prayer would remove it. If it stayed as a drop, then no Maliki. I'm the only one left that does it in my family now.

CuseItaliangirl said...

Yes... same in my family!

The Malocchio is very real. When your having extremely hard difficult days or lasting headaches that wont go away with conventional methods. You would have to see a Italian witch to have them removed. Prayers to St Padre Pio seems to help me.

The person being cursed has to look you in the eyes for the curse to work and then the one cursing has to spit on the ground.
My friend's grandmother from Sicilian culture explained it to us as teenagers.I believe it only works if the person being cursed also believes. I have never wished ill will on another person because I believe in karma...what comes around goes around. But I'm thinking about it because a neighbor of mine is spreading rumors about me I
caught her peeking in my window and then talking to my landlord about things that were false and quite frankly astonishing .
I'm thinking about using the information I received as a teen from my friends grandmother. Although she is already a miserable person and doesn't have any friends or a man. so karma is a bitch.I let karma take it's course and keep my good energy for myself.

My Great Grandmother might have been a strega. I was told that people from the Italian immigrant neighborhood in northern Wisconsin used to bring sick children to her and they were relieved of their distress after her prayers.
Her son (my Papa) said that you could give the malocchio to someone by withholding a compliment. He used the example of seeing a baby and refusing to say he or she was beautiful. He believed that if you didn't say "God bless you" when someone left your home or your presence you had withheld love and by failing to love, you had cursed them. He taught me the prayers to remove the evil eye on Christmas Eve at midnight. However, they were not unfamiliar prayers from our Catholic tradition and did not include the ritual with needles, water and oil. He said he prayed them daily for the protection of all his loved ones. A combination of devotion, common sense, faith and superstition handed down by his beloved mother who was born in Calabria!
